why choose north shore pediatric therapy for feeding therapy?

Feeding is both a social and sensory activity, but can be a highly frustrating time for parents when their child is having a difficult time in this area. At NSPT, we are a team of dynamic therapists who are dedicated to achieving results for our clients by working closely with the family and creating an individualized plan for the child's success. Feeding_Therapy-1.jpg

Who conducts feeding therapy?

All feeding evaluations and treatment are completed by either a Speech-Language Pathologist or Occupational Therapist who will implement research-based approaches to improve the feeding experience for the child, as well as for their family. Other relevant service providers such as Social Workers and a Nutritionist may also be part of your child’s team if necessary. The feeding therapy team is unique, because our staff will provide support with regards to:

  • Newborn/infant concerns: Latching and positioning
  • Weaning from tube feedings
  • Transitioning to first foods
  • Feeding aversions
  • Sensory concerns
  • Oral Motor Dysfunction
  • Picky eating
  • Swallowing disorders/dysphagia
  • Managing behaviors at mealtime

Following an extensive parent interview and observation of your child’s feeding skills, a specific plan will be created for your child in order to address the areas they are continuing to have difficulty in. Ongoing support will be provided in order to help maximize the child’s skills in home and at the school setting, if warranted. Home and school visits can be completed to offer the therapist insight as to how to improve the child’s performance in their natural environment, and recommendations for home and school are made to help increase the child’s success.
